The Laboratory of Quantum Information & Algorithmic Foundations (QIAF Lab) conducts theoretical and computational research at the frontier of quantum information science. Led by Dr hab. Elena Markiewicz, the lab focuses on developing the mathematical and algorithmic foundations necessary for practical, fault-tolerant quantum computation.
Key Research Directions
1. Quantum Error Mitigation & Fault Tolerance
Designing next-generation topological codes and decoding heuristics that minimize physical qubit overhead while preserving fault-tolerant thresholds under realistic noise models.
2. High-Performance Classical Simulation of Quantum Systems
Using tensor networks (MPS, PEPS, TTN) and advanced matrix product state methods to simulate strongly correlated quantum matter and verify intermediate-scale quantum processors.

What are the optimal error mitigation thresholds for distributed multi-party quantum state transmission across noisy channels?
How can high-dimensional tensor network contractions be accelerated on petascale classical GPU clusters?
What algorithmic bounds limit the classical simulability of parameterized quantum circuits?
Methodologies & Technical Approaches
Formulation of low-overhead surface code variants and color code decoding algorithms.
Development of distributed tensor contraction packages tailored for multi-GPU supercomputing architectures.
Theoretical complexity analysis of quantum variational optimization routines.
Facilities, Compute & Equipment
High-memory compute nodes (2TB RAM per node) configured with GPU-accelerated tensor contraction libraries.
Open verification suites benchmarking simulated quantum circuits against hardware-in-the-loop testbeds.
