Academic Biography

Dr hab. Elena Markiewicz is Associate Professor and Vice-Director for Scientific Research at the BBQ Institute of Advanced Science & Technology. She completed her undergraduate and doctoral studies at the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw, followed by a three-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching, Germany.

Her research centers on theoretical quantum information science, with special emphasis on quantum error correction codes, tensor network decomposition algorithms, and the simulation of many-body quantum systems on classical supercomputers. She is a recipient of the prestigious NCN SONATA BIS grant and the Prime Minister’s Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievements.

Research Group & Facilities

Dr hab. Markiewicz leads the Laboratory of Quantum Information & Algorithmic Foundations (QIAF Lab). The laboratory operates dedicated simulation clusters in the CeNT facility equipped with high-memory nodes specifically optimized for tensor contraction algorithms and open-system quantum dynamics simulations.

Key Responsibilities & Leadership

  • Coordination of the Institute's scientific research strategy, peer-review audits, and European grants.
  • Head of the Quantum Information and Algorithmic Foundations Laboratory.
  • Member of the Editorial Board for Quantum Science and Technology (IOP Publishing).
  • Supervision of graduate and postdoctoral research in quantum algorithms.
